Like any large scale construction project, installing a pool and all that goes with it is a major exercise that needs careful planning and consideration. You need to think about what type of pool will most suit your requirements, what you will need in addition to the actual pool to enhance the enjoyment of your pool such as terracing, landscaping, heating, equipment housing, safety equipment, maintenance items etc. and then add up all the costs involved before making any decisions. Remember, the actual cost of the pool itself can often be just the tip of the iceberg.

It is equally important to give careful consideration to choosing your pool company. You will be spending a lot of money so please don't be taken in by slick sales patter and glossy catalogues over the kitchen table. Ask to be taken to see some of the installations that the company has done and ideally meet with some satisfied customers. At the very least ask for the contact details of several previous customers and follow them up.

Last but not least, check that your pool contractor has adequate 'Assurance Decennial' . This 10 year insurance which covers both you and the contractor in the event of serious problems is compulsory in France but this does not mean that everyone has it. Don't be afraid to ask to see this document, it is your right. At Vendee Pools our 'Assurance Decennial' is with AXA who also supply our public liability assurance.
